Copper Queens midfielder Ireen Lungu believes the team has gained enough experience and has no excuse to lose games. Having competed against top teams at the World Cup and Olympic Games, she is confident that Zambia can now challenge any opponent.

As part of their preparations for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), the Copper Queens will take part in an invitational four-nation tournament from April 5-8, featuring hosts China, Uzbekistan, and Thailand.

Zambia last faced China at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games in a thrilling 4-4 draw. Recently, they wrapped up a two-match FIFA international friendly series against Malawi, winning one and losing the other.

The Copper Queens will be making their fifth appearance at WAFCON in Morocco from July 5-26, 2025.

Lungu hoping for more game time

Lungu, who is among the 24 players called up for the four-nation tournament, is eager to earn playing time under the new coach Nora Häuptle.

Speaking to Bolanews in an exclusive interview, she expressed her determination to contribute to the team’s success.

“Looking forward to being given some minutes to play by the coach. China is a good side; they play possession games. This time around we don’t have excuses to give because we have played big teams in all tournaments,” said Lungu.

The Sichuan FC midfielder also believes that winning the WAFCON title is achievable.

“Coaches don’t have problems, as long as we players are going to work hard and be united, it’s very possible to get the WAFCON trophy,” Lungu said. “All we need will just be to follow the instructions of the coach.”
