Zambia’s U17 Women’s National Team produced a spirited comeback to defeat Rwanda 2-1 and book their place in the second round of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers.

The Copper Princesses showed resilience and composure as they overturned an early setback to seal a 4-1 aggregate victory.

Rwanda drew first blood in the 15th minute through Sylvie Umwanankundi, whose well-taken strike briefly put the visitors in control and threatened to shift momentum in the tie. Zambia, however, refused to panic and gradually grew into the contest, creating chances while maintaining defensive discipline.

After sustained pressure, Zambia finally found the breakthrough in the 74th minute when Faith Kajiya Kapilingo calmly slotted home the equaliser. The goal shifted the momentum firmly in Zambia’s favour, with the team pushing forward in search of a winner.

Their persistence paid off eight minutes later when Natasha Kasema converted from the penalty spot in the 82nd minute, completing the turnaround and ensuring Zambia’s progression.

With a 4-1 aggregate scoreline, the Copper Princesses advance confidently to the next stage of the qualifiers.

Zambia will now face DR Congo in the second round, with fixtures and dates expected to be confirmed in due course as the team continues its quest for a place at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
