Mohamed Salah

Mohamed Salah is the second highest African goal scorer in the history of the UEFA Champions League having scored his 41st goal last night when Liverpool defeated Dutch side Ajax Amsterdam at Anfield.

Salah opened the score line with only 17 minutes played after Portuguese forward Diogo Jota released the ball to him to put the Reds in the lead with a brilliant shot from inside the box before Ghanaian midfielder Mohammed Kudus equalized with a scorcher of a goal in the 27th minute.

Liverpool however, restored their lead late in the 89th minute through Cameroonian defender Joel Matipi who headed in his first goal of the season to end the match 2-1 in favour of the home side.

Salah is now four goals away from breaking Didier Drogba’s record of the highest African goal scorer in the UEFA Champions League.

Drogba scored a record 44 goals and provided 15 assists in 92 appearances for three clubs in the Champions League.

He scored 36 goals for the English side, Chelsea FC where he also won the Champions League in 2012; 3 and 5 goals for Turkish club Galatasaray and French side Olympique Marseille respectively to set the record in the elite European inter-club competition.

Salah will look to surpass the African legend’s tally having already scored a goal this season for his Liverpool side who are also looking to reclaim the Champions League title after losing in the final last season to Spanish giants Real Madrid who were crowned Champions for the 14th time.

Out of his 41 Champions League goals, he scored 2 with FC Basel in his 6 appearances and 1 goal with AS Roma in 7 appearances while the rest of the goals have come at Liverpool FC where he is now the club’s highest scorer in the Champions League.
