Malawian Super League clubs have threatened to withdraw from the FIFA Plus deal, claiming they are not benefiting from the live-streaming agreement made in 2022.
The threat comes after delays in monetizing the live streaming of their league matches by the world football governing body.
The concerns were raised during the Super League of Malawi (Sulom) Annual General Meeting held yesterday in Lilongwe.
Sulom General Secretary Williams Banda stated that during their meeting with club representatives, they received feedback expressing dissatisfaction with the FIFA Plus deal, with clubs emphasizing that the arrangement has yet to yield any tangible benefits for them.
“It is true, teams are disappointed and they want out of the deal as it is no longer benefiting them. They hoped to cash out of the team but till now there is nothing since this agreement was made,” he said.
“Another issue clubs are also demanding is an agreement with Football Association of Malawi (FAM) in place since we never signed any official paper when we started this,” said Banda.
However, FAM General Secretary Alfred Gunda explained that the FIFA Plus project is still in its pilot phase, which will run from 2022 to 2027. After this period, proceeds will be distributed among the teams.
“We are in our third year, yes, teams are not receiving but they need to wait,” said Gunda.“I know FIFA plus is making revenue but as of now, the project has not been monetized to a point of sharing proceeds.”
