The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) and the Super League of Malawi (Sulom) are set to meet with league sponsors Telecom Network Malawi plc to propose raising the sponsorship deal to a minimum of MWK500 million per season, (approximately $297 000).

FAM president Fleetwood Haiya stated that, given Malawi’s current economic status, the current MWK150 million ($89 000) per season sponsorship is inadequate and requests an improved offer.

“In my manifesto, I made a promise to create a conducive environment for the top-flight league. Our desire is to see the league grow and become one of the exciting leagues in the region,” said Haiya.

“As a starting point, we are working to improve the sponsorship package to a minimum of MWK500 milion.”

Haiya also stated that there are plans to raise the subvention for clubs to a minimum of MWK20 million.

However, the Super league sponsor has indicated that they can manage MWK450 million per season.

The company’s chief executive officer, Michel Herbert, said his company will triple the K150 million sponsorship starting this season.

Currently, the winner of the Malawian league receives MWK40 million while the runners receive MWK15 million.
