Trident FC and Mululira Wanderers are the two National Division one teams that qualified for the 2023 ABSA Cup competition, along with six other Super League teams.

After defeating Jumulo FC on the road 1-0, Trident FC earned a spot in next year’s ABSA Cup competition which is set to kick off in March.

Their team captain John Mwengani says despite securing a spot in the country’s biggest cup competition, his team is eyeing promotion to the Super League, which is their primary goal this season.

“We have managed to achieve one thing, which is Absa Cup qualification,’ he said. “The team needs more glory; the aim of the team is to be promoted to the Super League; we are not content with Absa.”

“The expectation from the executive is so high we need to work extra hard as players to give what the exco and community want.”

When the league returns next year, Mwengani said that his team would need to avoid losing away games because that has been their major area of weakness thus far.

“Second half of the season we need to work extra hard, we need to stay on top four, we know our weakness we have not been doing well in away games we will work extra hard so that we achieve what we want as a team,” said Mwengani.

After playing 17 games, winning 9, drawing 5, and losing just three, Trident FC is tied for second place with Mufulira Wanderers FC in the National Division One League standings with 32 points each.

Both the National Division One League and the Zambian Super League will return on January 7th after a two-week break.
