After defeating Zimbabwe 2-1 at the Hage Geingob Stadium on Friday, Malawi is off to a great start in the AUSC Region 5 Youth Games in Namibia.
After dominating the game, Malawian attacker Mwisho Mhango opened the score in the 24th minute. Tadiwa Chamuchichi of Zimbabwe then equalized in the 57th minute.
Malawi, however, continued to apply pressure, creating scoring opportunities, and it paid off as Mhango returned to score again in the 72nd minute to give the junior Flames the victory.
Mhango, who won player of the match for his outstanding performance, expressed his happiness at having helped Malawi win their opening game.
“It sounds good to start well and also for me to score both goals for team Malawi. We had a good game and hope we will achieve something,” said Mhango.

Malawi coach Milias Pofera Jegwe revealed that their plan is to make a statement in Namibia this year.
“Zimbabwe is a good side, we played them during the Four Nations Tournament last year and we knew it will not be easy playing them. Our target is for us to win something and I hope it will be done,” he said.
Next up for the boys is to take on Angola on Sunday, 6th July 2025, at the same venue.
Namibia, the host, held the Malawi Women’s Football team to a goalless tie. Despite controlling play, Linda Kasenda, the junior Scorchers team coach, attributed the result to lost opportunities.
