Former Chipolopolo players Noah Chivuta and Nchimunya Mweetwa have tipped European heavyweights as the leading contenders to lift the 2026 FIFA World Cup trophy when the tournament kicks off on Thursday, June 11.

The tournament, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will feature 48 teams, including a record 10 African nations.

Speaking in an interview, Chivuta named Spain as his outright favorite to win the global showpiece while identifying Portugal as the tournament’s potential dark horse.

“Spain is one of my favorites to win it. Portugal, because of most of the players, this is their last World Cup. I think they will go all the way and be the dark horses of the tournament,” said Chivuta.

He also Portugal has experienced players to secure World Cup glory.

“If they don’t get this one, then it’s the end of the era for most of the players who may not participate in the next World Cup. I think they will go all out,” he added.

Chivuta also warned against overlooking South American teams, pointing to Brazil and host nation Mexico as possible surprise packages.

“This World Cup is being played in America, so teams like Brazil and Mexico themselves, being hosts, will be a surprise package,” he said.

The former midfielder further highlighted France as a major contender due to their attacking strength.

“If you look at France, their attack is very strong. Spain has a talented young squad, while Portugal has a strong midfield and quality attackers. My money will be on Spain, France, and Portugal. One of those teams could reach the final or even win it.”

Despite favoring European sides, Chivuta believes a South American nation could still spring a surprise during the tournament.

On Africa’s chances, Chivuta singled out Morocco as the continent’s strongest prospect to make a deep run at the World Cup.

“Morocco has a strong structure and quality players, which makes any coach’s job easier,” he said.

Meanwhile, former Chipolopolo striker Nchimunya Mweetwa identified Portugal, France, Argentina, and Spain as his top four favorites for the title.

“My top four are Portugal, France, Argentina, and Spain,” said Mweetwa.

He reserved special praise for Portugal, arguing that their midfield could prove decisive in their quest for World Cup success.

“Portugal has built a team over time, and they’ve got the best midfielders currently in the world,” he said.
