Perhaps a victory for Gareth Southgate’s men was never in doubt against a side that has never progressed past the first round of the World Cup.

Iran had to face a star-studded English side that made their intentions known from the onset with various attacks on goal while enjoying the majority of the possession.

They would eventually get their reward in 34 minutes through Jude Bellingham who was left unmarked in the penalty box after a cross from Luke Shaw, he sent his effort into the back of the net to score England’s first goal of the game.

Arsenal FC youngster Saka got his country’s second and his first World Cup goal in the 43rd minute with a first-time volley after a corner through a headed assist from Harry Maguire.

It did not take long before Chelsea forward Rahim Sterling got on the scoresheet from a Harry Kane assist to make it three for the Three Lions as the two sides headed for the first-half break.

Southgate’s men continued where they left off in the second stanza as Saka completed a brace after a poor clearance from Hossein Hosseini in the 62nd minute.

Iran pulled one back through Mehdi Taremi who run off the back of Maguire and fired his shot over Jordon Pickford in the 65th minute.

In the 71st minute after only seconds on the pitch when he was subbed on for Saka, Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford scored to extend England’s lead to 5 goals with a brilliant piece of skill to put it past Hossein Hosseini and into the far bottom corner of the net.

Just when everyone thought the Three Lions were done, in the 89th minute, substitute Jack Grealish scored after a cross from Newcastle’s Callum Wilson who unselfishly set him up to finish inside the 18-yard and make it 6-1 for the English.

Iran were however awarded a penalty in the last minutes of the match and Tamera made no mistake from the spot, sending the keeper the wrong way and completing his brace.
