Benin head coach Gernot Rohr says his side will be going all out for victory when they face Nigeria in a decisive 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier this evening.
Rohr’s team sits top of Group C with 17 points, two ahead of South Africa and three ahead of Nigeria, meaning a win or draw would secure Benin’s first-ever appearance at the World Cup finals.
However, should South Africa beat Rwanda by two or more goals, a draw will not be enough for Benin.
Rohr, who guided Nigeria to the 2018 World Cup in Russia, is now aiming to make history against his former team.
“We are very happy to be here and to be in the position of the leader. Nobody believed this when we started the competition,” Rohr said in his pre-match briefing. “It’s a fantastic game — a final — and we have a good chance to go to the World Cup. The memories with Nigeria were wonderful, but now we are in a new situation. We are the only team with our destiny in our hands.”
No Draw- Rohr Declares
Rohr emphasized that his team will not settle for a draw despite facing a strong Nigerian side still in contention for qualification.
“We go for a win,” he stated. “It will be a very open match because Nigeria also has to win. We’ve played most of our matches away, so we’re used to tough conditions. My players have made good progress, and their team spirit is very strong.”
Benin will be without five key players due to injuries and suspensions, but Rohr remains optimistic that his side can rise to the occasion.
“It’s not a war, it’s a football game….We just need to be ready, stay relaxed, and enjoy the moment.”
In the other Group C fixture, South Africa face Rwanda, needing a win to keep their qualification hopes alive.
