Newly appointed Kenya national team head coach Benni McCarthy has vowed to give his best to ensure his team meets expectations.

McCarthy’s journey begins with a challenging fixture against Gambia in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Kenya will face Gambia on Thursday, March 20th, at Stade Alassane Ouattara in Ivory Coast, before hosting Gabon at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi on Sunday.

Currently, the Harambee Stars are fourth in the group standings with five points, having earned one win and two draws from their three matches so far.

Ahead of the match, McCarthy expressed his readiness for the challenge ahead.

“We will work extra hard to get the team ready, that is the plan. Right now it is Gambia in sight and our focus is to do well in that game. It will not be easy but it can be done so the team has to be prepared,” said the 47-year-old former Bafana Bafana player.

“I’m thrilled to lead my first two World cup qualifiers. I’m eager to work with the talented squad I have selected for the campaign. There’s plenty of hard work and dedication ahead. But we are ready to embrace the challenge as a team,” added Mccarthy.

The winners of each group will earn automatic qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Additionally, the four best runners-up will advance to the CAF playoff tournament, where the winner will compete in a FIFA playoff for a chance to secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup.
