Cape Verde produced an extraordinary performance to secure a historic 0-0 draw against global heavyweights Spain in their debut FIFA World Cup match on Monday.
A nation of just over 500,000 people, Cape Verde stood firm against Luis de la Fuente’s star-studded side to record a result that will reverberate across world football.
The Blue Sharks were superbly organised from back to front, while Spain predictably dominated possession; they were frustrated for long spells by their spirited and determined opponents.
At the heart of Cape Verde’s resilient display was 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha, who delivered an inspired performance between the posts. He produced a series of outstanding saves to keep Spain at bay throughout the match and was deservedly named Man of the Match.
Speaking after the match, Vozinha, who received widespread acclaim for his heroics, said:
“We worked a lot for this. And We knew we were playing against one of the best national teams in the world, but we also know our quality. We worked a lot for this big day. We knew it was going to be very difficult, but we’re very happy,” he said.
Spain midfielder Rodri admitted his side struggled to break down Cape Verde’s defensive setup.
“The team tried, I think we had good fluidity. It’s about fine-tuning those chances we created, because against a team that sits back so much you’re not going to have many, and you know you have to take them. It’s that simple,” the Manchester City star and former Ballon d’Or winner said.
