Tottenham Hotspur have ended their 17-year wait for silverware by winning the UEFA Europa League, defeating Manchester United 1-0 on Wednesday night in an all-English final in Bilbao.
The decisive moment came just three minutes before half-time. A whipped cross from Pape Matar Sarr caused chaos in the United box, with Brennan Johnson making a sharp run to the near post. As Johnson reached the ball, Luke Shaw inadvertently redirected it past goalkeeper Andre Onana, leaving him stranded and giving Spurs the only goal of the match.
Despite a late push from Manchester United, their best chance came when Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario failed to handle a routine free-kick from Bruno Fernandes. Rasmus Højlund’s ensuing header looked destined for the net, but Micky van de Ven produced a remarkable acrobatic goal-line clearance to preserve Spurs’ lead.
With UEFA Champions League qualification at stake, manager Ange Postecoglou—who had vowed to win silverware in his second season at every club he’s managed—finally delivered. The victory not only ended a long trophy drought but also secured Tottenham a place in next season’s Champions League.
This marks Spurs’ first major trophy since winning the League Cup in 2008 and their first European title in 41 years.
