While their peers are challenging for the title and qualification to Europe, Manchester United’s short-term goal is to survive relegation as they sit eight points from the drop zone.

On boxing day, United suffered their eighth defeat of the season when they went down 2–0 to Wolves at the Molineux Stadium.

This result left United 14th on the log, eight points from the relegation zone. They are closer to the drop zone than to the top four. This has left coach Ruben Amorim setting survival as the main target.

“In this moment we just have to survive, sometimes to win and work in the team we already knew. like I say we have to continue working hard,” Amorim said in the post-match conference.

Asked if qualification for Europe would be the ideal target, he responded, “No, no, we have to work on a lot of things in our club so let’s focus on each game each time,” the Portuguese said.

Manchester United have been a regular in the top division of English football and have never been relegated since the 1973/74 season.

That season, the record Premier League title holders finished 21st with 32 points after a record of 10 wins, 12 stalemates, and 20 defeats.
