After Arsenal blew a chance to maintain their five-point lead at the top of the table with a 1-1 draw against Brentford, Manchester City needed all three points to close the gap to three points.

It didn’t take long for the Cityzens to change the arithmetic in the standings, scoring less than five minutes into Sunday’s match against Aston Villa.

Rodri was at hand to score the opening goal from their first corner of the game with an assist from Riyad Mahrez.

In the 39th minute, City got their second after Erling Haaland put IIkay Gundogan through on goal with a low cross.

Before halftime, City were handed a penalty which Mahrez converted to put them 3-0 up at the break.

Aston Villa got a consolation goal through Ollie Watkins in the 61st minute.

The win moved Pep Guardiola’s men to 48 points, three points behind Arsenal.

City are looking to win the Premier League for the second time in a row after winning it in the last two seasons.

They will take on league leaders Arsenal on Wednesday night. City will head into this fixture knowing very well a victory would put them on top of the table.
