English Premier League leaders Liverpool dropped points at Anfield on Sunday after drawing 2-2 with Manchester United thanks to Ivory Coast’s Amad Diallo’s late equalizer.

Ruben Amorim’s side produced an unexpected positive performance to earn a point away after struggling in recent visits to Anfield, with their eight away league games without a win being their longest streak since 1979.

The first half was closely contested, but Liverpool had the most opportunities, despite the game ending 0-0. However, in the second half, the visitors took the lead in the 52nd minute when Bruno Fernandes lashed the ball into the top corner from a tight angle, marking United’s first goal at Anfield in six years.

The visitors’ lead was short-lived, though, as Cody Gakpo was picked out by Mac Allister and cut inside Matthijs de Ligt before firing into the far corner to tie the game in the 59th minute.

All of United’s hard work was undone after the hour mark, when De Ligt was penalised for handling in the box, allowing Mohamed Salah to score the resulting penalty kick in the 70th minute, despite Andre Onana’s efforts.

After falling behind, Amorim introduced Alejandro Garnacho, who made an immediate impact by flying down the left flank and driving a ball into the box, where Diallo swept it home for an equaliser in the 80th minute.

It was a disappointing outcome for the Reds following their initial comeback, but their lead over Arsenal remains as it was heading into 2025. Liverpool can also be proud that they have only lost once to the Red Devils in 14 league meetings.

They are leading the title race with 46 points but remain in the bottom half of the table with 23 points in 20 games.
