Zambia’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup came to an end on Sunday following a 0–1 defeat at home to Niger.
The Chipolopolo Boys, who have never qualified for the World Cup started brightly in the first half but failed to convert their chances. Patson Daka missed a point-blank header from close range in the 21st minute, while Fashion Sakala and Lameck Banda also came close but could not find the breakthrough.
After the break, Niger grew into the game and began to control possession. In the 55th minute, Zambia goalkeeper Lawrence Mulenga parried a shot into the path of an unmarked Anthony Sosah, who capitalized on the rebound to give his side the lead.
That proved to be the decisive moment, as Niger held on to secure victory. The result saw them finish second in Group E with 15 points, keeping their playoff hopes alive depending on results from the other eight groups.
Grant’s reaction after the defeat
“To be honest, I don’t know how to analyze this game. We needed to go in the half time with 2 or 3-0. We played so well but then we conceded a goal from one attack. This is football what can I say, we created a good team, we created alot of chances in the game and we lost,” said Avram Grant.

“I am very very disappointed because I think we have a good team…. And also we needed to win this game but there is no deserving in football you need to take it. At the end of the day, it’s the goals that matter and we lost the game,” he added.
Niger’s coach, Badou Zaki, praised his side for the performance, saying they earned the win.
“We deserved to win. In Africa there are no small teams anymore,” he said.
Zambia ended their qualification campaign with nine points, having managed just one home victory while losing three matches.
The Chipolopolo will now shift focus to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which kicks off this December. They are drawn in Group A alongside Morocco, Mali, and Comoros.
