Gamphani Lungu has been knocking on the Chipolopolo door with his impressive performances at Orlando Pirates, but coach George Lwandamina is not giving anything away.
Lungu has scored two goals and provided one assist in his last five games for Pirates and will be hoping to make the national team squad.
Zambia is preparing to face Algeria and Togo in Group I of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers next month, with Lwandamina set to lead the team.
Zambia will be away to Algeria on 25 September before hosting Togo four days later in Ndola at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium.
Some players, like Lungu and midfielder Clatous Chama, have been on song for their clubs, leaving fans to demand their inclusion in the final team that will be announced soon.
Last week, Lwandamina addressed the media on the sidelines of the local camp training but ducked questions on Lungu and Chama.
“I don’t want to pre-empt. You will see the squad which will be announced. They are all Zambians.
“It is good for the country, and if there is that competition in the team, then you have a team. If players can fight, then you have a team. We are following them,” Lwandamina said.
Meanwhile, Lwandamina revealed that he has been monitoring Zambia’s opponents as he plots a good start to the qualifiers.
“We are following what is happening. We have been following what they have been doing, so we are there,” he said.
