Italy-based Zambian winger Lameck Banda will be out of action for the next two months after undergoing surgery on his right knee.

Banda underwent surgery today and is expected to recover in 45–50 days, according to a statement from his club.

“US Lecce announces that today Lameck Banda underwent surgery on his right knee by Prof. Giuliano Cerulli at the Villa Fiorita clinic in Perugia, in the presence of the medical director of US Lecce, Dr. Giuseppe Congedo,” read the statement in part.

“The arthroscopic surgery consisted of cleaning the patella and the integrity of the other anatomical structures such as menisci, ligaments, and cartilage was confirmed. The surgery was a perfect success and the recovery time is estimated at 45–50 days.”

Banda is now a doubt for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in June against Morocco and Tanzania.

Another injury forced him to miss Zambia’s games in the friendly four-nation tournament in Malawi next month.

Banda has appeared in 21 matches, scoring two goals and providing four assists in Serie A, including a brace.

In 15 international appearances for Zambia, he has scored three goals and provided one assist.

His potential absence from the Chipolopolo squad could be a major setback for Avram Grant.

Banda played an important role in the team’s qualification for the 2023 Afcon tournament, including a brace against Lesotho in the qualifiers.
