Kafue Celtic proprietor Lee Kawanu has described Samson Ngulube’s move to Finnish top-flight side IFK Mariehamn as a positive step not only for the player but for Zambian football in general.

On Monday, Celtic announced that Ngulube had completed a transfer to Mariehamn, a move the club described as a part of its continued commitment to expose Zambian players to the highest level.

Kawanu has told Bolanews in an interview that Ngulube is poised to succeed in the Veikkausliga owing to his natural qualities.

“Sam is a talented player; we do not have too many of such natural left-footed players that are aggressive both going forward and defensively,” Kawanu said.

He added that Finland, while not the toughest league in Europe, provides a competitive environment that can help players develop.

“It is competitive enough to help develop our players to the next level, so it is a good stepping stone for him and a good pathway for our players not only from Celtic but coming from Zambia,” he said.

Kawanu expressed hope that Ngulube’s success abroad will inspire other Zambian players and create opportunities for them to follow in his footsteps.

“Hopefully, Sam will do well enough to open up the door for players from Celtic and other teams in Zambia,” he said.

IFK Mariehamn plays in the Finnish top flight and has been a consistent feature in that league since their promotion in 2005.

Last season, they finished ninth in the 12-team league with 21 points. This position put them into the relegation playoffs, where they managed to finish second and secure their place in the top flight for the next season.

The 2026 Veikkausliga will kick off in April, and Ngulube will be in contention for a starting place when IFK Mariehamn hosts TPS Turku on April 4.

In the interim, they will be involved in the Liga Cup, which kicks off this weekend.
