Zambian international midfielder Miguel Chaiwa has been ruled out for the rest of the year due to an ankle injury.

Chaiwa was injured 19 minutes into Zambia’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AfCON) qualifier against Chad on October 11, 2024, in Ndola, which finished 0-0.

He went on to miss the return game in Yaounde, which Zambia won 1-0.

His club, BSC Young Boys, announced on Monday that the 20-year-old will be unavailable for selection this year.

Injured Miguel Chaiwa heading to the dressing room after Zambia’s game against Chad at the Levy Mwanawansa stadium in Ndola on October 11, 2024.

Chaiwa “suffered several ligament injuries in his right ankle during an opponent’s foul while playing for the Zambian national team against the Republic of Chad,” the Swiss club said. “Miguel Chaiwa has to undergo an operation and will be out for months.”

Zambia suffered five key player injuries during the previous international window but things don’t seem to be getting better as Chaiwa will now miss next month’s AfCON qualifiers against Ivory Coast and Sierra Leone, which will be played on November 11 and 14, respectively.

While Leicester City striker Patson Daka is nearing the end of his recovery from an ankle injury suffered in August, Zambia’s captain Lubambo Musonda and Edward Chilufya are still out due to injuries.

Goalkeeper Lawrence Mulenga, who suffered a facial injury during the Chad game, is recovering, while Stopilla Sunzu and Lameck Banda are now fit and played for their respective clubs last weekend.
