The Chipolopolo Boys suffered their second consecutive defeat at the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), surrendering a 1-0 lead in the final 17 minutes as Angola struck twice to snatch a 2-1 victory.

After a goalless first half that was evenly contested and saw Zambia’s goal by Kayombo Evans disallowed for a handball, Zambia broke the deadlock 28 minutes after the restart through Power Dynamos midfielder Dominic Chanda, who tapped home from close range after connecting with a Kelvin Kapamba free kick.

However, just five minutes later, Zambia lost concentration, allowing Angola to mount sustained pressure. The Palancas Negras equalized in the 79th minute through substitute Kaporal.

Desperate for a win to stay in the competition, Angola gained momentum and outplayed Avram Grant’s side, who were forced to defend deep. In the 85th minute, Kaporal completed his brace, pouncing on a defensive error by Kabwe Warriors defender Kilian Kanguluma, who failed to clear his lines, gifting the forward the chance to score the winner.

Zambia, now bottom of Group with zero points, must beat third-placed Morocco on Thursday and leaders Kenya on Sunday to have any chance of progressing.

Angola, meanwhile, sit second in the group with four points, behind Kenya, who lead with seven following their 1-0 win over Morocco earlier today. DR Congo are level on three points with Morocco after two matches.
