Zambian champions Power Dynamos recorded their first-ever CAF Champions League group stage victory after edging Nigeria’s Rivers United 1-0 in Uyo on Sunday evening.
The win comes after a difficult start to their campaign, which included a 3-0 loss to RS Berkane, a 1-0 defeat to Pyramids, and a goalless draw with Rivers United in the first leg. The result keeps their hopes of advancing to the knockout stage alive.
In Uyo, the first half was tightly contested, with Prince Mumba coming close to opening the scoring. The second half remained evenly matched until the 50th minute, when Kondwani Chiboni’s effort, initially appearing as a cross, ended up in the back of the net, giving the Zambian champions the decisive lead.
Substitute Austin Muwowo almost doubled the lead in injury time, but his strike went wide. Rivers United also threatened on several occasions, but goalkeeper Willard Mwanza made a series of excellent saves to preserve the clean sheet.
Meanwhile, Dynamos’ next opponent, RS Berkane, suffered a 3-0 defeat to Pyramids, who now top the group with 10 points and need only a draw to advance.
Dynamos have climbed to third place with four points, while Berkane sit second with seven points, and Rivers United remain bottom with just one.
With six points still available, Oswald Mutapa’s side will be motivated to secure another win when they host RS Berkane at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium this Saturday.
