Andrea Taonga Mkandawire, a Botswana-based Zambian midfielder has described the Botswana Premier League as a competitive league.

Mkandawire joined now-relegated Calendar FC midway through the season and quickly established himself as one of the club’s standout performers.

He featured in 13 league matches and three FA Cup games, scoring two goals and providing four assists. His impressive displays also earned him two Man of the Match awards.

In an interview, he revealed that adapting to the country’s playing conditions has been one of his biggest challenges.

“In the Botswana Premier League so far it has been my first season. But I would say it’s competitive, and overall football is enjoyable here. Coming from Zambia, coming here, adapting to the weather, and playing at night. Because mostly in Zambia we play in the afternoon. So I would say I miss the adapting and I’m getting there.”

Mkandawire has also drawn comparisons with Jwaneng Galaxy’s Congolese midfielder Manda “Ma’Goire” Nongo, a nickname his teammates have embraced.

“I would say we met with Nongo in the previous game. He’s a great player, and looking at what he has done for Botswana football so far, I want to break his record. Mostly I want to get there personally. But I don’t want to follow his footsteps. I want to make my own name as well.”

Despite attracting interest within Botswana, Mkandawire said his long-term ambition remains securing a move to Europe.

“My main goal is playing in Europe. If I don’t get a good team in Botswana, I’m heading for Europe. That’s my main target.”

The midfielder has attracted attention within the Botswana Premier League and is expected to join one of the sides in the coming weeks.
