Mighty Mukuru Wanderers president Dr. Thomson Mpinganjira says his team’s victory in the Castel Challenge Cup is a huge relief for him, the players, and the technical panel.

Mpinganjira stated that the team’s poor performance raised many questions in his mind, prompting him to consider discontinuing sponsorship of the team because it is not providing him with returns.

His sentiment comes after the team’s Castel Cup win over Mzuzu City Hammers in Lilongwe at Bingu Stadium on Saturday.

“I keep sponsoring the team but they are not giving results. At times I thought of just walking away when you look at the results the team is giving you despite a huge investment made,” he said.

Mpinganjira said the players and technical panel can now breathe a sigh of relief after being subjected to ridicule and taunts for failing to win silverware for the past season.

The team has been struggling to a point of failing to settle players salaries before Mpinganjira took charge in 2021 as president.

Since Mpinganjira took over, the team has won two trophies. They won the Airtel Top 8 Cup in 2022 but did not win any trophies last season, while their rivals, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, won every trophy in Malawi.

In April this year, Mpinganjira made headlines when he threatened Wanderers supporters to deploy police armed with guns as one way to stop fans from causing violence.
