The Malawi 2026/27 season will kick off this Saturday with the FDH Bank Premiership League amidst stadium tension as league runners—the Super League of Malawi (Sulom) is at loggerheads with the Football Association of Malawi (FAM).
Two weeks ago, FAM issued a list of stadiums fit to host matches this season, condemning three stadiums—Mzuzu Stadium, Nankhaka Stadium, and the second-largest stadium, Kamuzu Stadium.
Kamuzu Stadium, a government facility, is used as the home ground for the two biggest powerhouses in the country—FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and Mighty Wanderers.
The league launch is scheduled for this Saturday at Kamuzu Stadium, where defending champions Wanderers will host Karonga United.
A letter seen by Bola News in Malawi, dated April 23, from Sulom requested FAM to conduct another assessment at Kamuzu in anticipation of the league launch, but FAM has rebuffed the idea.
FAM’s response reads: “This timeframe is insufficient to allow for a comprehensive inspection and for the relevant committee to adequately deliberate and make an informed decision on the suitability of the venue.”
The letter, signed by FAM’s general secretary, Abdulrahman Chiwalo, also warned Sulom. “Please note that failure to comply with this directive may result in the imposition of penalties in accordance with the applicable club licensing regulations.”
But Sulom general secretary Williams Banda told Bola News that the match will still be played at Kamuzu Stadium, for a fixture cannot be changed with just hours to kick off.
