Following the win, Malawi is third in group H with 3 points with Tunisia top and Equatorial Guinea second with equal points. Liberia, Namibia and Sao Tome, all lost their opening games.

Reacting to the triumph Malawi coach Patrick Mabedi said that he was excited with the outcome. “We stopped the curse that any time we come to West Africa we lose the match,” he said.

Mabedi disclosed, that his strategy was to attack, and his charges carried out his instructions without fail.

He also said that he was happy with Mphasi as he hoped that he would score.

“I knew he would score and that is why he started on the bench. With his energy I was not surprised to see him scoring, I am proud of the young man,” he said.

Malawi now shift focus to a home fixture against North African nation, Tunisia at Bingu National Stadium on Tuesday next week. The Tunisians were 4 nil winners over Sao Tome.

Although Mabedi acknowledged that playing Tunisia is a challenging match, he promptly declared that his men are ready to take on the Arabs.
