With a 2-0 victory over rivals Dynamos on Sunday afternoon in the Zimbabwe Premiership at Rufaro Stadium, Highlanders Football Club clinched a season double.

The home crowd was disappointed as Kelvin Kaindu’s team managed to secure three points in the battle of Zimbabwe thanks to goals from Godfrey Makaruse and McKinnon Mushore.

In the buildup to the derby, Dynamos players boycotted training sessions due to unpaid allowances. It is the first time that the Highlanders have beaten DeMbare twice in one season since 2017.

The win leaves Kaindu’s side in fifth place with 29 points, while Dynamos are in sixth placed on the log with 24 points.

Speaking in a post-match interview, Kaindu expressed delight with the team’s ability to defeat their rivals away.

“I think there is nothing better in the league than for you to do a double against Dynamos. We managed to score two goals, and we kept a clean sheet,” said Kaindu.

He, however, bemoaned the missed chances, stating that they could have won by a bigger margin.

“I think we played well, and we could have come out with a bigger scoreline, especially looking at the number of scoring chances that we had,” he stated.

Kaindu believes the win will reenergize his charges in their pursuit of the league title.

“I think it gives us a lot of motivation. We had played a lot of draws during the season. This is how we started in the first round; we managed to pick up maximum points. It’s a big win for the team, but we have to remain focused,” Kaindu said.

The Highlanders next match will be another derby on Sunday against the 11th-placed Bulawayo Chiefs at Barbourfields.
