Malawi national team striker Gabadinho Mhango is in talks with South African Premiership side Richards Bay over a potential move.
The development follows Mhango’s fallout with his current club, Marumo Gallants, after he took legal action against them in a South African court for failing to pay him image rights worth R800,000—approximately MWK80 million Malawian Kwacha.
Mhango’s manager, Mike Makaab, confirmed ongoing discussions with Richards Bay but noted that no deal has been finalized yet.
“We are still talking; possibly we will agree on terms…. Otherwise there are a number of teams interested in his services,” said Makaab.
Since news emerged of Mhango’s legal battle with Gallants, the club has stopped selecting him for matches.
He last featured on April 19, 2025, against Golden Arrows in a league fixture where he started on the bench. He has missed four matches since.
The 32-year-old scored five goals in the league last season and was Gallants’ top striker before suffering an injury while on international duty with Malawi.
Should the deal go through, Richards Bay would become Mhango’s seventh club in South Africa. His previous teams include Golden Arrows, Moroka Swallows, Orlando Pirates, Bidvest Wits, AmaZulu, and Bloemfontein Celtic.
While at Pirates, Mhango won the PSL Golden Boot, becoming the first Malawian to achieve the honour with 16 goals in a single season.
