FIFA Directs FAZ to Reconvene Elective AGM by May 10, 2025

FIFA has ordered the FAZ to reconvene its halted elective Annual General Meeting within 21 days—warning that failure to comply could risk FAZ’s suspension from international football.

FIFA has instructed the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) to reconvene its elective Annual General Meeting (AGM) within 21 days, with the meeting to take place no later than May 10, 2025.

“As for your request for guidance in this situation, please note that we are of the opinion that the Annual Elective General Meeting (AGM) must be immediately reconvened to take place in 21 days (in accordance with article 21 paragraph 3 of the FAZ Constitution) and that the meeting takes place in Lusaka, or nearby, latest by 10 May 2025,” said FIFA Chief Member Associations Officer Elkhan Mammadov, as quoted by FAZ in a statement on Tuesday.

He added, “An internal assessment of the situation was conducted based on your reports as well as the reports submitted by the FIFA representatives who were present on site in Livingstone in order to attend and observe this important Congress.”

“In this regard, we have received with great concern the information regarding the order of interim injunction of the High Court of Zambia, which was issued less than 24 hours before the starting time of the FAZ Elective Annual General Meeting, restraining the said meeting from being held as scheduled on 29 March 2025,” Mammadov continued.

He further warned, “For the avoidance of doubt, please note that the infringement of the aforementioned provisions of the FIFA Statutes may give rise to grounds for the suspension of FAZ irrespective of whether the infringement was attributed to FAZ or not.”

FAZ Issue Formal Notice For AGM

FAZ confirmed on Tuesday that, following FIFA’s directive, it will issue a formal notice for the reconvened AGM.

The guidance from FIFA follows the halting of the March 29 AGM due to an interim injunction issued by the High Court of Zambia. The ruling barred FAZ from proceeding with the scheduled elections and suspended the AGM.

The injunction stemmed from a case filed by Humphry Mwape Musonda, acting as General Secretary of Damiano Academy FC, against FAZ President Andrew Kamanga, FAZ General Secretary Reuben Kamanga, and the Sports Council of Zambia. Musonda argued that the FAZ leadership had exceeded its mandate and that the electoral process lacked transparency.

Following the court’s ruling, FAZ was barred from holding elections, and the Sports Council of Zambia was directed to establish a Transitional Committee to oversee FAZ affairs, as the Executive Committee’s term had expired.
