After scoring most of his success as an assistant coach at the international level, former Chipolopolo coach Patrice Beaumelle has won his first major title at club level.

Beaumelle, who for most of his career worked as an assistant coach to compatriot Herve Renard has just guided Algerian side MC Alger to their first league title after a 14-year dry spell.

Beaumelle joined Alger last year after being on the sidelines since he left the Ivory Coast job in 2022.

Under the Frenchman, Alger have been impressive, playing 26 matches winning 18, drawing six and only recording two losses in the league.

The team has the most potent attack, scoring 51 goals, and the meanest defence, as they have only conceded 16 goals.

With four matches left before the season’s close, his side leads the table with 60 points, 14 better than second-placed CR Belouizdad, who are the defending champions.

Beaumelle previously worked as an assistant coach to Renard when they guided Zambia to the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations title.

After Renard left his post in 2013 to take charge of FC Sochaux, Beaumelle was appointed as his successor at Chipolopolo but left a year later to join Renard’s Ivory Coast bench where they won the AfCON in 2015.

He has also worked as Ivory Coast coach, Morocco assistant coach, and the head of Morocco under 23 before landing the Alger job.
