Mauritania impressed and managed to qualify to the knockout stages of the AfCON tournament, before suffering elimination in the Quarter finals by Cape Verde after losing 1-0.

The Lions of Chinguetti have made three appearances at Africa’s showpiece tournament and made a historic mark by reaching the round of eight for the first time in their history.

The Mauritania football Federation announced that it had extended the contract of Coach Amir Abdou via a statement.

His extension of a two-year contract came amidst reported interest from the Ghana FA to engage Amir ahead of the 2025 AfCON and World Cup qualifying matches.

Contrary to circulating information about a monthly salary offer of $45,000, GFA General Secretary, Prosper Harrison Addo refuted these claims, stating, “It’s never true that Ghana has approached Amir Abdou for the Black Stars job,” as quoted by Akoma FM.

“The Mauritania football Federation announces that it has reached a final agreement with the national team, Amir Abdou, to extend his contract as head of the national team until 2026,”read the statement.
