In the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, the Flames of Malawi will play host to Burundi on September 5 and then travel to West Africa to play Burkina Faso on September 10.

Gabadinho Mhango, a striker, has been left out of the 28-man squad because he does not fit within team’s system.

However, head coach Patrick Mabedi told said reporters that Malawi was not prepared for the qualifiers because of inadequate planning.

Mabedi said a day to prepare for crucial games will hugely affect the team. “We have never been in camp for just a day, this is my first time.

“Honestly I am not happy with this arrangement. We informed our [bosses] that we will start our camp on August 12, but we were told that we will regroup on August 25″

“This means training will start on September 2nd, meaning that real training will start on September 3rd for the match on September 5th,” he said.

Asked if Malawi is ready to give results, Mabedi said Malawians should expect a difficult game mainly against Burundi.

“We did not prepare, but is it what it is, we just need to find means of getting results. We should expect a difficult game during the first match,” he said

The Football Association of Malawi gave Mabedi targets to qualify which will seem to be difficult following poor preparations.
