Gambia jets into Ivory Coast after near-seconds to disaster in flight

The Scorpions in Group C together with Senegal, Guinea, and Cameroon reached the Quarter finals of the 2021 AfCON edition.

The Gambia National team have arrived safely in Ivory Coast for their Africa Cup of Nations tournament Campaign set to begin on 13th January 2024. 

The Gambian football team’s charter flight experienced pressurization issues and extreme heat during their flight to the Ivory Coast for the AFCON.

The aircraft had to turn back due to the pressurization problem, causing further delays for the team.

Air Cote d’Ivoire sent a replacement aircraft, an Airbus A319, to transport the team to their destination for the tournament.

The faithful of Gambia are relieved to see the Scorpions arrive after their chartered plane had to return to Banjul less than ten minutes after takeoff because of a loss of oxygen and cabin pressure.

The Gambia football Federation announced that the team arrived safely in a statement published on their twitter page. 

“Alhamdoulillah! We have landed safely in Yamoussoukro,” part of the statement read. 

prior to the AfCON qualification, Gambia has faced challenges in their path to the tournament after the team played all their qualifying matches away from home following CAF’s suspension of their independence Stadium due to being unsuitable to host international matches.

For the second time, the Scorpions are taking part in Africa’s largest soccer showcase.

Group C includes defending Champions Senegal, Guinea, and the Indomitable lions of Cameroon. The Gambia’s campaign will begin on January 15th against Senegal.
