Chipolopolo winger Lameck Banda says the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) was a great experience and that the team will improve on its mistakes, promising to bounce back stronger in the next year.
Zambia was eliminated from the ongoing Afcon in Ivory Coast after losing 1-0 to Morocco in Group F following 1-1 draws with DR Congo and Tanzania.
Morocco won the group with seven points, followed by the Congo with three points, while Zambia and Tanzania finished with two each to bow out.
In reaction to Zambia’s elimination, Banda stated that participating in the tournament gave him valuable experience and a learning curve.
“A great journey we had, learning new things and learning from our mistakes,” he said. “Even as we are out now, we would like to say thank you all for your support.
“A lot has been learned and we focus ahead. Playing in the Afcon games is a huge privilege for me to represent our beloved country, Zambia, and I keep learning. The journey has just started and we keep on preparing more.
“We keep our heads up and we will continue to improve,” said Banda.
The Italy-based winger, who started two of Chipolopolo’s Afcon matches against Tanzania and Morocco, was a fan favourite despite failing to score.
Against Morocco, the US Lecce rapid winger constantly manoeuvred past defenders. Only Soufiane Boufal made more dribbles (4) than Banda (3).
Lecce on Lameck Banda after Afcon exit
Banda will shift his attention to his club that has not won a match since he left for international duty.
Lecce has confirmed today that the Zambian star is expected to “join the team on Saturday directly in Genoa.”
Lecce will take on Genoa on Sunday in the Italian Serie A.
Banda has two goals and four assists in 12 league matches this season and his return to the Italian club will be a huge boost.
