The South Africa U-17 Men’s National Team kicked off their 2025 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations Group B campaign in style, securing a thrilling comeback 4-3 victory over Egypt on Monday night.

In a fiercely contested match, Amajimbos delivered an impressive performance, earning all three points to start their journey on a high note.

With the win, South Africa now sits at the top of the group alongside Burkina Faso, both with three points.

However, only 10 of the 16 teams in the tournament will qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar later this year.

South Africa head coach Vela Khumalo remains confident in his team’s chances of qualification.

“I think we are very clear with our players to say, as much as everyone is saying it’s a group of death, we are happy that we are counted as one of the best in that group as well,” Khumalo said.

“We are going to showcase our talent. We have a talented team, but more important than anything is the character and mentality—we want to see ourselves at the World Cup,” he added.

Eyes on World Cup

Khumalo emphasized the significance of World Cup qualification for his squad.

“I think what is important for the boys is that it will be a massive achievement for them, just being in the World Cup and being seen by the world, showcasing their talent.”

The Amajimbos remain optimistic about their campaign.

“If we say we are the best in our country, we need to compete among the best in the world, and the world stage is waiting. So let’s see what’s going to happen going forward,” said the coach.

South Africa will now turn their focus to their next fixture against Cameroon on Thursday.
