Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) has signed a K10.8 million sponsorship agreement with the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) to support the Copper Queens and the inaugural Zambia Football Association (ZFA) Cup competition.

The agreement will see K7.2 million invested annually in the ZFA Cup, while K3.6 million will go towards the Copper Queens through brand and image rights sponsorship.

FAZ president Keith Mweemba said the partnership would unlock immense opportunities for the women’s game in Zambia.

“KCM has once again taken up a pioneer role by seeing an opportunity in the women’s game. What we are witnessing today sets KCM apart from the rest of the corporate world,” he said.

Mweemba also said, “We are happy that their sponsorship is not just restricted to the Copper Queens but also the general women’s league with a historic cup competition. The newly introduced Zambian Football Association Cup (The ZFA Cup) is all encompassing with teams in amateur and professional leagues competing against each other in all 10 provinces and it caters to both men and women.”

Sponsorship Signals Commitment to Women’s Football – KCM

KCM acting chief executive officer Malcolm Mewett said the K10.8 million partnership demonstrated the company’s commitment to supporting the growth of women’s football, which has remained underfunded.

“Through this partnership, KCM is committing US$600,000.00 to support the Zambia Women’s National Team. This includes our support for WAFCON 2026 and the women’s package under the inaugural KCM–FAZ Cup — a historic competition that KCM is fully funding to ensure it is competitive and sustainable,” Mewett said.

“This aligns with our broader commitment to women’s empowerment. Through our Gender Action Plan, Women in Mining initiatives, and our Sustainable Livelihoods Programme, we are creating opportunities for women in technical roles, in entrepreneurship, in leather production, poultry, tailoring, and early childhood education.”

The sponsorship launch was also attended by Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts Permanent Secretary Kangwa Chileshe and FAZ vice-president Mutale Ng’andu.

Others were FAZ Women Representative Colonel Priscilla Katoba, FAZ General Secretary Charles Chakatazya, and members of the FAZ executive committee.
