Onana Under Fire for Continued Errors But Man Utd Coach Defends Him

Onana's latest errors proved costly as Manchester United were held to a 2-2 draw by Lyon, with the goalkeeper at fault for both goals.

Cameroonian goalkeeper André Onana is facing mounting criticism from Manchester United fans following a series of costly mistakes. The latest came in Thursday’s 2-2 Europa League draw against Lyon, where Onana was at fault for both goals. The backlash intensified just a day after former United midfielder Nemanja Matic labeled him “one of the worst goalkeepers” in the club’s history.

Onana initially let Thiago Almada’s free kick slip past him in the first half, putting the Red Devils on the back foot. However, United responded with goals from Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee to turn the game around. But another costly error from Onana—parrying Corentin Tolisso’s shot straight into the danger zone—allowed Cherki to capitalize and snatch a late equalizer for the French side.

Despite the scrutiny, head coach Ruben Amorim defended his player, saying he himself has made more mistakes as a manager this season than Onana has on the pitch.

“If you look at the season I’ve made more mistakes than them during these last games and during these last months,” Amorim said.

“There’s nothing I can say to Andre in this moment that will help him, so the most important thing is to be natural and then when the time comes I will choose the best XI to play. But I’m really confident in Andre.”

Since the start of last season, Onana has committed eight errors leading directly to goals in all competitions—the highest of any goalkeeper currently playing for a Premier League club.

United host Lyon in the second leg at Old Trafford next Thursday.

With the Red Devils 13th in the Premier League, their only realistic hope of European football next season is through the Champions League spot afforded to the Europa League winner.
