Baciro Cande reign as Guinea Bissau head Coach ends

The West African team has not advanced past the group stage of an AfCON competition for the fourth time.

The head coach of Guinea Bissau Baciro Cande, will not have his contract renewed because of the team’s lackluster performance in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Since the 2017 edition, Guinea-Bissau has now gone 12 games without winning any match in an AfCON competition.

Following his appointment by Guinea-Bissau in 2016, Cande led the squad to their fourth consecutive editions of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Guinea-Bissau began their campaign with a 2-0 loss to Ivory Coast, then suffered a 4-2 loss to Equatorial Guinea. Finally, they lost 1-0 to Nigeria to finish bottom of their group without a point.

The West African team has not advanced past the group stage of an AfCON competition for the fourth time; they have not done it in the previous three editions.

Multiple sources have reportedly that the country’s FA that following their group-stage exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, the 56-year-old’s contract will not be extended.

Cande joins in the footsteps of Ivory Coast’s Jean Louis Gasset, Rui Vitoria, Djamel Belmadi, Tom Saintfiet, Chris Hughton, and Jalel Kadri, who were all fired by their teams after elimination from the tournament.

Guinea will now concentrate on selecting a new squad manager as they get ready to start getting ready for the upcoming 2025 AfCON Qualifiers.
