Mabedi reacts to Malawi’s historical WCQM victory over Liberia

Malawi is third in group H with 3 points with Tunisia top and Equatorial Guinea second with equal points.

Substitute Chifundo Mphasi (11) inspired Malawi to a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Liberia at Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex to begin their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign with a win | FAM.

Malawi’s poor performance against West African countries ended as the Flames defeated Liberia on the road in their World Cup qualifying match on Friday.

The Flames stole a historical victory through Zambian based, Kabwe Warrior player, Chifundo Mphasi lone strike in the 78 minutes after receiving a cross from Tatenda M’balaka.

Following the win, Malawi is third in group H with 3 points with Tunisia top and Equatorial Guinea second with equal points. Liberia, Namibia and Sao Tome, all lost their opening games.

Reacting to the triumph Malawi coach Patrick Mabedi said that he was excited with the outcome. “We stopped the curse that any time we come to West Africa we lose the match,” he said.

Mabedi disclosed, that his strategy was to attack, and his charges carried out his instructions without fail.

He also said that he was happy with Mphasi as he hoped that he would score.

“I knew he would score and that is why he started on the bench. With his energy I was not surprised to see him scoring, I am proud of the young man,” he said.

Malawi now shift focus to a home fixture against North African nation, Tunisia at Bingu National Stadium on Tuesday next week. The Tunisians were 4 nil winners over Sao Tome.

Although Mabedi acknowledged that playing Tunisia is a challenging match, he promptly declared that his men are ready to take on the Arabs.

“We won against Liberia, we celebrated, and it ended there. Now we need to start thinking of Tunisia, it is a difficult game, but we will face them,” he said.
