Zesco sacks Lwandamina after CAF Confed. exit

Lwandamina will no longer be the head coach of Zesco United, the club has announced.

Ndola giants Zesco United have announced the departure of head coach George Lwandamina and his assistant, Tenant Chilumba, from the club with immediate effect.

The decision marks a significant change in the technical staff of the club, which has been under Lwandamina’s leadership since December 2022.

“Coach George Lwandamina and Assistant Coach Tenant Chilumba have left the club with immediate effect,” the club said.

Siwale to take over as Zesco interim coach

In the interim, Zesco United’s second Assistant Coach, Emmanuel Siwale, has been appointed as the caretaker head coach. He will take charge of the team while the club embarks on a search for a new permanent replacement.

“In the interim, Zesco United second assistant coach Emmanuel Siwale will assume the role of head coach while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time head coach,” the statement continued.

Lwandamina’s departure comes barely a week after failing to lead Zesco United into the final preliminary round of the CAF Confederation Cup. This follows the club’s inability to overturn a 1-0 away defeat against Zimbabwean side Dynamos FC in Botswana.

The Ndola-based club could only manage a goalless draw at home on Saturday, which sealed their exit from the competition.

Appointed in December 2022 to replace Numba Mumamba, Lwandamina’s tenure has ended without any notable silverware. His contract, which was set to expire in 2025 with an option to extend, is now terminated early.

Zesco has yet to kick off their 2024/25 Super League campaign due to CAF games engagement.

They will host Green Eagles this weekend to begin their campaign at the Levy Mwanawansa stadium.
