“Our Sincere Apologies” – Liwewe Reacts To ZPL Sanctions On Zesco United

Zesco United CEO Ponga Liwewe said the club management has taken full responsibility for the error and instituted measures to prevent any recurrence.

Zesco United Football Club has taken responsibility for the sanctions imposed on them for using unregistered players in their season opener against Konkola Blades.

The nine-time Zambian champions fielded 20 ineligible players in their match against Konkola Blades on 16th August, 2025, at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.

The Zambian Premier League imposed sanctions, which included forfeiture of the match via 3-0 victory awarded to Blades.

The club was also fined K10,000, which must be paid within seven days.

Club Chief Executive Officer Ponga Liwewe acknowledged the ruling, with a promise to rectify the problem.

Liwewe added the the club management has taken full responsibility for the error and instituted measures to prevent any recurrence.

“We take full and unconditional responsibility for this error. This lapse is a clear breach of set standards, which our league managers, sponsors, fans, and supporters expect of us. Effective immediately, the club has instituted remedial action and is implementing corrective measures to prevent any recurrence.”

He also apologized to the Zesco United Football Club fraternity for the embarrassment caused to Zega Mambo.

“We extend our sincerest apologies to our players, our dedicated supporters, our partners, the Zambian Premier League, and the wider football community. Our commitment to the integrity of the game and to restoring faith in our operations is absolute.”
