After defeating Mufulira Wanderers 1-0 at Shinde Stadium, Zesco United built a two-point lead at the top of the 2024–25 Zambian Premier League standings.

With the win, the Ndola-based team, led by interim coach Emmanuel Siwale, has dislodged Kabwe Warriors from the top of the league standings with 43 points from 23 games.

On a day when Mighty believed the game would go without a goal, George Ngoma scored in the 88th minute to earn the nine-time Zambian champions the maximum number of points at Shinde Stadium.

Since Emmanuel Siwale took over from veteran George Lwandamina, he has guided Zega Mambo to 11 victories, 2 defeats, and 10 draws from 23 matches in the current campaign.

Speaking to the media in a post-match interview, Siwale indicated that the league is tough but praised his side for emerging victorious.

Up Next defending champions Red Arrows.

“Our league is tough; even this week our attention shifts to the home match against the Red Arrows, yet another tough match. No game is easy; like I always say, we need to work hard so that we can maintain our stay there (at the top of the log).”

Asked whether Zesco United is heading for their 10th league title, Siwale has remained calm, saying the league is far from over.

Siwale.

“The league is far from over, we cannot talk about that (winning the league); our focus is to make sure we work hard and take each game as it comes and maintain what we are doing.“

Following this defeat, Mufulira Wanderers are sitting 7th on the table with 33 points. Ahead of the Week 24 fixture, Zesco United will host the Red Arrows at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium, with one objective: to extend the lead at the top.

On the other hand, defending league champions, 4th on the log, registered a nil-all against Mutondo Stars at home on Saturday.
