Zanaco Football Club left-back Fredrick Mwimanzi believes that training in sandy areas is a positive move for Zambian clubs, as it enhances player performance.
Mwimanzi, who joined the Bankers last season, endured a challenging campaign as the team narrowly survived relegation.
With the 2025/26 MTN Super League season fast approaching, most clubs are currently in the thick of pre-season preparations. Teams have been setting up training camps in various locations, including Mongu, Kitwe, Mufulira, and Ndola.
While some football pundits, like former Chipolopolo midfielder Noah Chivuta, have questioned the effectiveness of sand-based training, Mwimanzi has expressed strong support for the practice.
Speaking to BolaNews in an exclusive interview, Mwimanzi highlighted the fitness benefits of training on sand.
“Training in sand is very much okay and very helpful. Power Dynamos won the league — they trained in sand. At the Club World Cup, we saw how teams from Brazil performed; 50% of their players train in sand and they perform well. It helps increase strength and build up muscles fast,” he said.
He further emphasized the advantages by pointing to global examples.
“I think it is really helpful because I have seen top and great players training in sand. The only difference, I think, is that in Zambia we go as a team, while those top guys go as individuals. And I think it’s because of the facilities they have and the programs they receive from their clubs,” he added.
The former Kabwe Warriors defender is determined to help Zanaco improve their performance this season. The Bankers will kick off their 2025/26 Super League campaign with a fixture against FC MUZA.
