Earlier this week, Mufulira Wanderers, who were promoted to the Super League last season, named Justin Chinama as their new head coach, demoting Harrison Tembo to the position of assistant coach.
After a spate of disappointing performances cost him his job in 2019, Chinama is back at the storied club that was promoted back to the super league after three seasons in the national league. This is his second stint there.
His return, however, has been met with mixed reactions, particularly from Mufulira Wanderers supporters who believe that this may be a recipe for confusion on the technical bench.
George Katongo, president of the Mufulira Wanderers, defended the club’s decision in an exclusive interview with Bolanews. He insisted that Chinama is the one who brought the current coach coaches at Mufulira Wanderers and that they are united.
“Because of the previous presence of the new coach and their established working connection, there is no divide,” Katongo said. “They are familiar with one another, have collaborated before, and are still working as a unit.”
Katongo also revealed that Wanderers is looking to reinforce their squad ahead of the Super League.
“We are targeting to reinforce the team, and we are already in the process of acquiring new players,” he said.

He has urged wanderers’ fans to rally behind the team and maintain order at Shinde.
“Supporters should come out in large numbers. They should act responsibly in order to avoid receiving punishments from the FA. You know, supporters are the twelfth players, and they should give morale to the team.”
