Mbombo: ‘Golden boot doesn’t matter for now.’

Nkana striker Idris Mbombo has downplayed his Golden Boot ambitions, insisting that his priority is helping the team finish strong and secure continental qualification.

Despite being in contention for the 2024/25 Golden Boot, Nkana striker Idris Mbombo says his main focus is helping the team secure a stronger league finish.

The Congolese forward has netted 11 goals this season, just one behind current top scorer Titus Chansa, who leads with 12. Mbombo’s recent form has reignited his Golden Boot hopes, with four goals in his last five matches.

He scored his 11th goal during Nkana’s 1-0 win over Green Buffaloes in their Week 31 fixture, a crucial victory that pushed the team to 54 points and kept their hopes of continental football alive.

Though he had a slow start to the campaign, Mbombo appears to have rediscovered his best form and is now determined to help Nkana secure a continental spot.

Speaking exclusively to Bolanews, Mbombo emphasized that his priority remains helping the team collect maximum points, rather than chasing individual accolades.

“It’s not about me scoring; it’s about the team getting maximum points in every game. The golden boot doesn’t matter for now; we are just taking each game as it comes. We will try to get the maximum points. It’s not about getting the golden boot this time; it’s about the team first,” said Mbombo.

“We will continue fighting; whatever God gives us, we will take it,” added Mbombo.

And reacting to the result against Green Buffaloes, Mbombo said: “We knew that it was not going to be an easy game; we tried to score first so that we could contain the game and collect three points. That’s what we did and we are happy as a team.”

Nkana will battle it out with Power Dynamos in their next Super League assignment in the much anticipated Kitwe Derby on April 20th.
