Mbombo Defends Zambian Strikers: “It’s Just a Matter of Time”

Golden Boot winner says Zambia has top finishers — they just need patience and a bit of luck

Despite criticism of Zambian strikers for their low scoring rate, Nkana FC’s Congolese forward Idris Mbombo has come to their defense, insisting that the country has no shortage of attacking talent.

On Friday, Mbombo clinched the Super League Golden Boot after finishing the season as joint top scorer with 13 goals — a tally he shared with Power Dynamos’ Titus Chansa.

Zambian forwards have come under fire for lacking a clinical edge in front of goal, an issue many coaches, including CHAN coach Wedson Nyirenda — have described as a national concern.

But Mbombo believes the talent is there, and all that’s needed is patience.

“I think we have good Zambian strikers, it is just a matter of time,” Mbombo said. “You know scoring goals sometimes takes luck.”

He pointed to FC MUZA’s Andrew Phiri and Golden Boot co-winner Chansa as proof of the country’s attacking potential.

“If you look at Zambian strikers [like] Andrew Phiri and Titus [Chansa], they are good strikers with very good technique and very powerful, it is just a matter of time, they will score more goals,” Mbombo said.
