The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) will hold an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) on Saturday at the Mulungushi International Conference Centre in Lusaka to address proposals submitted by its members.
At the last Annual General Meeting held in June this year, MTN Super League side FC MUZA proposed making the Zambia Premier League (ZPL) chairman position, which is currently held by Cephas Katongo, elective.
Another proposal came from the Women’s Super League club Elite Ladies, who want more voting rights for women’s clubs.
FAZ president Andrew Kamanga stated that the EGM will seek to adopt some of the proposed constitutional amendments to the association’s constitution.
“The EGM is a culmination of some amendments that were deferred from the 2024 Annual General Meeting held in June. The EGM will deliberate on proposals from the two-member items submitted by Elite Ladies Football Club and MUZA. The crux of the submissions revolves around the proposal for an elected Zambian Premier League, while the other submission is around the representation of the Zambian Women Super League voting rights. The congress will also deliberate on the state of the Referees Association of Zambia,” Kamanga wrote in his weekly column, the President’s Corner, on Monday.
Kamanga added, “Our hope is that the membership has used the time between the AGM and EGM to brainstorm on the proposals. We have done our best to keep everything within the constitutional framework. We are mindful of a growing tendency to embrace some level of adventurism in pursuing constitutional changes. Our hope is that the process is not open to abuse but be utilised for the advancement of our game.”
What is FAZ’s current position on ZPL Chairmanship?
In September last year, Kamanga stated that the process of completely delinking the ZPL from FAZ is being done gradually.
“With regard to ZPL, you will note that the process started by amending the constitution, so we had to formally recognize ZPL two years ago, and a committee was set up,” Kamanga told reporters at the Golden Peacock Hotel during the official launch of the ZPL.
He added, “We have now reached a point where we are now transitioning to get to the ultimate. So it’s not a process that will happen overnight, but it’s an ongoing process, so where we have reached, we are more or less at 50% because the ultimate is to get as many of the clubs to be part and parcel of the management.”
With FC MUZA’s proposal set to be addressed this weekend, it remains to be seen if the club’s wish to have the ZPL chairman’s position elective will be adopted.
