At Choma’s Independence Stadium on Sunday, Green Eagles Football Club lost their Week 2 MTN Zambian Premier League match against visiting Nchanga Rangers 1 nil after failing to capitalize on home ground advantage.
The loss followed the Choma-based team’s thrilling season debut, as they defeated NAPSA Stars 2 nil on the road at REIZ Arena last weekend.
Perry Mutapa, the head coach of the Choma-based team, has put qualifying for the ABSA Cup as his short-term goal despite this home loss.
“Short term is to qualify for ABSA. We have to go game by game. Today three points were lost, but not everything is lost. We can see something is working,” Mutapa said.
Mutapa, was left disappointed by his team’s failure to convert chances. Ilonga Itaka gave the visitors the lead in the 23rd minute.
“Disappointing result, but I think we had chances to equalize and maybe go on to win the game,” he admitted.
“Conceding first affected most of our boys. We departed from the way we play until we corrected it. Conceding early affected our game plan.”
Despite the setback, the Eagles boss insisted his side created enough opportunities to rescue the match and stressed the need to improve their finishing.
“We had a lot of chances. We just have to work on our finishing. I think we had chances to win the game.”
