Benjamin Chisala, who finished the 2023/24 season as the top scorer for Atletico Lusaka in the National Division One League, has taken the Zambian Super League by storm in just three matches after his team was promoted to the top flight. In the 2023-24 FAZ National Division One League season he netted 13 goals.

The 20-year-old rookie striker has already scored three goals in his first three Super League games.

On Thursday, he scored the game’s only goal against Zanaco from outside the 18-box, giving Atletico its first victory of the season.

Atletico’s head coach, Brian Kunsenama, praised the striker and hopes he continues scoring more goals.

“Good for the boy. Let’s hope he maintains his scoring boots,” Kunsenama said after Chisala scored his third goal of the season. “The boy has been doing that; it is not new. Last season he was our top scorer. I am happy that he can score as many goals as he can; as a striker, he needs that because that builds his confidence to perform better and score more goals.”

Athletico ready to replace Chisala if he leaves the club

Asked about the possibility of Chisala leaving the club, Kunsenama said he is unconcerned about the player’s possible departure from the club, stating that another striker will take over.

“If that time comes, as Atletico Lusaka, we will always find a solution,” he responded. ” If you followed the club, the other season when we were in the National League, I think six of the boys left, and everyone said that the team was finished, but we brought in our under-17 boys, and they stepped up and won promotion without the best we had that time.

“We always build players. If an offer comes for Benjamin, believe me, there is someone waiting to take over the responsibility.”

Atletico has established a reputation for developing talented young players who are then exported to Europe. Among their products are Cagliari striker Kingston Mutandwa, FC Zurich’s Joseph Banda, and Rishon Lezion FC defender Gift Mpande.

Earlier this month, their Under-20 winger Gift Siame joined Spanish side CD Leganes.
